29th August 2026 – (Hong Kong) Actress Carina Lau steered her newly qualified architect nephew Jeff Lau into one of the city’s most discreet design circles this week, joining a cocktail party for André Fu Studio’s twenty-fifth anniversary and the global launch of Fu’s Assouline monograph A Designer’s Vision.
Fu, the Hong Kong-born interior architect better known abroad as André Fu, hosted family, long-time friends and collaborators. Among those spotted with Lau and Jeff — Chinese name Lau Siu-yan — was Victoria Tang-Owen, daughter of the late Shanghai Tang founder Sir David Tang. The evening formed part of a run of events marking a quarter-century since Fu set up his practice, after years of hotel and restaurant work that made him one of Asia’s most watched hospitality designers.
Born into a storied Macao gambling dynasty as a grandson of the late Fu Tak-iam — often recalled in Chinese as Fu Lao Jung — Fu left for Britain at fourteen, later taking a master’s in architecture at Cambridge and training under minimalist John Pawson. He founded AFSO, now André Fu Studio, in 2000 and built a portfolio spanning restaurants, bars and hotels rather than trading on the family name. Reports put the clan’s fortune near HK$100 billion, yet Fu rarely discusses his background, remains unmarried and is often cast as one of Hong Kong’s most eligible bachelors.
His signature projects blend Eastern aesthetics with contemporary calm. Credits include The Upper House and The St. Regis Hong Kong, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, Capella Taipei, Dusit Thani Bangkok and London’s The Emory, alongside earlier work such as Duddell’s and K11 Artus. International titles have repeatedly ranked him among Asia’s leading interior talents, praising spaces that feel crafted rather than merely luxurious.
Lau, a long-time friend, has been publicly championing Jeff since he became a registered Hong Kong architect with the Hong Kong Institute of Architects. The University of Nottingham graduate has drawn social-media chatter for a resemblance to uncle Tony Leung Chiu-wai; Lau previously posted that applause was due for “our family’s big architect Jeff” and urged him to define his own spaces. Bringing him to Fu’s anniversary was widely read as a networking push for the thirty-one-year-old as much as a social call.
