28th August 2026 – (New York) Bitcoin held close to the $80,000 mark after a rapid advance from roughly $63,000 last week, signalling a clean break above its prior trading range and renewed risk appetite across crypto markets. Intraday prints approached the threshold on 25th August as liquidity deepened and spot demand broadened, extending gains that began late last week.
Macroeconomic headlines formed a supportive backdrop. On 24th August at about 11.55am UTC, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlined a new sanctions push targeting entities linked to Iran, while Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said military options had not been ruled out. The emphasis on economic pressure, rather than immediate escalation, tempered some concerns over supply risks and energy‑driven inflation.
Market analytics pointed to vigorous spot participation. Glassnode reported that short‑term price momentum accelerated to levels consistent with overbought conditions, reflecting a decisive shift in sentiment and “meaningful capital deployment” rather than thin‑market swings. Spot trading volumes rose sharply week on week, with buying pressure visible across major centralised venues.
Derivatives activity also firmed, with futures open interest rising and perpetual markets showing strong net buying as traders added leverage alongside the spot move. The build‑up in activity suggested rising speculative appetite but also highlighted the risk of volatility should positioning unwind.
Institutional interest strengthened in parallel. US spot bitcoin exchange‑traded funds drew about $1.9 billion in net inflows last week, their strongest weekly haul of 2026 to date, while weekly trading volume in the products more than tripled from the prior week.
