29th October 2026 – (Hong Kong) A cha chaan teng in Tsing Yi reported a workplace theft that ended with the arrest of a 77‑year‑old local man and an 83‑year‑old local woman, after a staff member said HK$5,500 was taken from her wallet while she was on shift. The case came to light when Miss Sun, who works at a restaurant in Cheung Fat Plaza, told TVB’s Scoop programme that she had briefly stored her handbag in an unlocked booth drawer during a busy period. She discovered at about 10.30pm that the bag had been opened and cash was missing, prompting a review of security footage and a subsequent police report the next day.

The incident occurred around midday on 28th September. Video evidence showed Miss Sun placing her handbag in the drawer while a man in a yellow top and cap and a woman in a green top were dining nearby and appeared to notice where the bag was kept. Roughly half an hour later, the man was seen opening the drawer and searching the handbag. The woman then handed the bag back to him to return to the drawer. The man located the wallet, removed items, replaced the handbag and left. The woman settled the bill and departed soon after. The entire sequence lasted about fifteen minutes and went unnoticed at the time by staff and patrons.

Following an investigation, police detained a 77‑year‑old man and an 83‑year‑old woman in North Lantau on 15th October on suspicion of theft. Officers said part of the missing cash was recovered during the operation. The restaurant had provided lockers with locks for staff, but Miss Sun acknowledged opting for convenience by using the nearby unlocked drawer.
