29th August 2026 – (Hong Kong) Authorities have arrested a forty-two year old man on suspicion of animal cruelty following a chemical contamination incident at Kam Ying Court in Ma On Shan. In the early hours of 26th August, a resident contacted an animal welfare group to report that a substantial quantity of detergent pods had been intentionally thrown into the residential complex’s pond. The introduction of these highly alkaline chemicals rapidly polluted the water, killing a fish instantly and causing injuries of varying degrees to more than thirty turtles. In some cases, the turtles’ skin was visibly whitened from chemical burns.
Upon receiving the report, law enforcement officers attended the scene and reviewed closed-circuit television footage as part of their investigation. The suspect was taken into custody on 28th August and remains under detention while inquiries continue. Management staff at Kam Ying Court responded promptly by removing the affected turtles from the pond, thoroughly cleaning them, draining and deep cleaning the pool, and then replenishing it with fresh water before returning the turtles to safety. The incident remains under investigation as authorities establish further details.
