HKEX to extend derivatives after‑hours trading to 4.15am from March 2027

2nd November 2026 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388) said it plans to push back the close of its derivatives After‑Hours Trading session from 3.00am to 4.15am starting in March 2027, a change aimed at giving market participants greater flexibility to respond to overseas moves outside local daytime hours. The timetable is contingent on regulatory approval and on the market being technically and operationally ready.

Group Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Lau Bik‑yin said the deepening interconnection of global markets requires investors to react nimbly across time zones, adding that a longer window would help participants manage exposures in fast‑moving conditions and bolster Hong Kong’s position as an international risk‑management centre. In parallel with the extension, HKEX will adjust certain post‑trade service windows and risk‑management processes, while keeping existing day‑session hours and holiday trading arrangements unchanged.

The exchange said it may consider a further extension of the after‑hours close to 5.15am in November 2027, subject to how the market develops after the March change. Alongside the timing move, HKEX is working with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority on a pilot using e‑HKD to support advance margin deposits outside regular banking hours, providing participants with added payment flexibility during the extended session. Firms are encouraged to assess the operational impact, prepare systems and vendor arrangements, and undertake the necessary resource planning ahead of launch.
