Customs chief inspects new Huanggang Port lanes

Customs said the visit focused on ensuring every preparatory task was in place before travellers and freight begin using the facility. Chan and senior colleagues toured the port to understand the latest readiness work, with the department stressing that services must be fully operational on day one and that frontline staff are familiar with the new lane layout.

The new Huanggang Port will be the first boundary control point in Hong Kong to adopt unified one-stop vehicle lanes, allowing inbound and outbound motorists to complete immigration and customs formalities in a single stop rather than processing separately on each side. The model is intended to shorten queues for cross-boundary private cars, coaches and goods vehicles that currently face repeated checks when moving between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

Chan paid particular attention to vehicle clearance on every floor, watching officers conduct live commissioning tests on the lane equipment and monitor how data links between agencies perform under trial conditions. Managers accompanying the commissioner reviewed contingency plans so any teething problems on opening day can be handled without disrupting the wider boundary network.

Customs pledged to continue intensive preparation so facilities operate safely and smoothly, aiming to give residents and visitors the best possible crossing experience as opening day approaches. The inspection underscored how vehicle throughput at the unified lanes will be central to the port’s promise of faster cross-boundary movement once services begin, and that staff training and hardware checks in the final weeks will determine how quickly motorists benefit from the new arrangement at one of the city’s busiest land boundaries.
