2nd November 2026 – (Hong Kong) A widely shared post on Threads has shown four visitors seated or squatting beside a pillar on the Sham Shui Po MTR platform using large suitcases as an improvised table while eating takeaway meals, reportedly including roast meat rice. The witness who uploaded the image complained about a strong food odour on the concourse and platform, expressing frustration at the disregard for basic rules.

The images prompted a wave of online condemnation, with users calling the behaviour outrageous and lacking in consideration for others, while some responded with sarcasm about the “creativity” of dining anywhere and the unexpected multi‑use of travel cases. Others argued the matter should have been referred immediately to station staff; the original poster replied that they were short of time and questioned why passengers should be expected to do staff duties.

The incident has renewed attention on MTR by‑laws. Eating or drinking within paid areas is prohibited under section 27(b), with offenders liable to a maximum fine of HK$2,000. If the conduct causes nuisance or annoyance to other passengers, it may also breach section 25, which carries a maximum fine of HK$5,000.
