29th October 2026 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory advised in the morning that an astronomical high tide coinciding with the northeast monsoon could lift evening water levels above normal, with low‑lying coastal areas at risk of minor flooding. Through the night, residents reported localised inundation in Sha Tin and Tai Po. Near Yuen Wo Playground, cycle tracks and adjoining pavements were seen under water with debris floating on the surface. Joggers passing the area remarked that it was unusual to run while watching floodwater rise along the route. In Tai Po, a pedestrian subway that had been cordoned off earlier showed signs of flooding, though not severe, prompting some commuters to detour to reach home.
According to real‑time tidal data, the Tai Po Kau Tide Gauge Station reached a peak of 3.16 metres at about 10.30pm. Online comments noted that water levels had already felt high in the afternoon before edging up further after dark, while others observed that similar tidal episodes tend to recur annually.
