5th September 2021 – (Hong Kong) A Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) student wrote the phrase “Hope lies in the people, change begins with resistance” on the campus “Frog Road” during the 2014 Umbrella Movement. However, at about 2.30pm yesterday (4th), the sprayed words on Frog Road were removed, and only a small amount of white paint marks remain on the scene.
As early as 2014, students wrote huge words on this section of the road in white paint. The university had planned to clear the words the following year, but was stopped by many students. In the past few years, the Student Union has also been retouching the words from time to time.
In response to this incident, the University of Science and Technology replied that in order to cooperate with the gradual restoration of physical teaching, the university has been cleaning the campus since the beginning of this year. Since the university has just resumed face-to-face classes on 1st September, it will arrange for campus cleaning routine again today.
