28th October 2026 – (Hong Kong) Hongkong Post has reported a record operating deficit of HK$905 million for 2025‑26, marking its ninth consecutive annual loss as weakening demand for traditional mail continued to weigh on finances. In its latest annual report released on Wednesday, the department said the past year demonstrated “resilience and adaptability” in a volatile global economy, while acknowledging the mounting pressure from protectionist policies, tighter customs regimes, higher terminal dues and rising operating costs.
Postmaster General Donald Ng Man‑kit said these external headwinds, coupled with structural shifts in how people and businesses communicate, had significantly affected the trading‑fund operation. He added that Hongkong Post is intensifying efforts to capture cross‑border e‑commerce flows and upgrade logistics capabilities, positioning the organisation to serve new parcels‑driven demand even as letter volumes remain under strain.
The postal operator noted that it is reshaping services and streamlining processes to bolster efficiency, with a focus on technology‑enabled handling of small packets and international items. Management said the strategy aims to stabilise revenue and improve service quality as market conditions evolve, while emphasising its continuing obligation to provide universal postal services across the city.
