28th August 2026 – (Hong Kong) On the afternoon of 27th August, a two-year-old white pet dog escaped while being walked by a foreign domestic helper in the North Point harbourfront area. It is believed the helper failed to maintain a firm hold on the dog’s lead, allowing the animal to break free and run wildly, eventually making its way into the Eastern Corridor and then entering the Central Wan Chai Bypass tunnel. The incident occurred during the evening rush hour, startling numerous motorists who saw the dog weaving through traffic amidst heavy congestion. Drivers were forced to make abrupt stops to avoid the animal, and several quickly alerted authorities for assistance.

Police officers and tunnel staff responded promptly, coordinating with personnel from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who arrived to provide support. A pursuit ensued within the tunnel, culminating after some time in officers successfully cornering and securing the dog deep inside the bypass, moving it to a safe location. An initial on-site assessment revealed the dog, estimated to be around two years old, had suffered a bleeding injury to its right foreleg, likely sustained while evading vehicles or running frantically.

The dog was subsequently handed over to SPCA staff, who transported it to a centre for veterinary examination and further care. Through follow-up efforts and investigation, authorities were able to make contact with the owner to arrange for the dog’s aftercare and recovery.
