5th February 2026 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS), a prominent student body with a 68-year history, has formally voted to begin its dissolution. The organisation’s standing committee convened and passed the resolution today, marking a definitive end to its operations. In an official statement released on social media, the federation reflected on its long legacy of uniting university students across Hong Kong, engaging with society, and advocating for change. It stated that having witnessed the city’s social transformations, it had consistently aimed to voice the concerns of students and citizens alike.
The statement expressed profound honour in having stood alongside the public, describing the journey as one with no regrets. It affirmed an unwavering concern for the future of both Hong Kong and China. However, it noted that in the face of a changing environment, its members and associates had come under increasing and severe pressure in recent years. After careful consideration of all factors, the decision was made to draw the organisation to a close today.
This conclusive move follows a strange episode in June 2025, when an unauthorised press release falsely declaring the HKFS’s immediate dissolution was circulated by impersonators. At that time, the federation’s representative, Lai Cheuk-yin, was forced to issue a stern public clarification denouncing the notice as fake. The HKFS was founded in 1958 to represent Hong Kong’s student voice and foster wider social participation. Its influence waned after 2015 when several major university student unions, including those of the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, withdrew from the federation through referendums.
