9th May 2023 – (Jakarta) The West Jakarta District Court in Indonesia has sentenced former police general Teddy Minahasa to life imprisonment for drug trafficking. The sentence was lighter than the prosecutor’s demand, which was the death penalty.

During the trial, it was revealed that Minahasa, the former West Sumatra regional police chief, was found guilty of stealing 5 kg of crystal methamphetamine from the evidence locker, replacing it with alum, and then selling the drug for personal gain. He was arrested on 14th October, 2022, just a few days before his inauguration as East Java regional police chief.

This case is significant as it is the second instance this year where a former police general has been found guilty of serious crimes. In February, Ferdy Sambo was given the death penalty for the murder of his subordinate.

The verdict reflects the Indonesian government‘s commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking and corruption within its law enforcement agencies. The judiciary’s swift and impartial handling of the case is a positive step towards preventing such crimes and upholding justice.
