22 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases reported today incl. security guard with unknown sources, cluster outbreak at restaurant in Hysan Place suspected


12th January 2022 – (Hong Kong) Dr.Chuang Shuk-kwan from Centre for Health Protection announced at the 4.30pm press conference today that there were a total of 22 new COVID-19 cases reported as of 12am today (12986-13007), 17 of them are imported cases, 1 local case with unknown sources and 4 of  them are import-related cases. 20 of the new cases are Omicron variant carriers.

Two more family members of the Tung Ah Dispensary cluster turned positive today. An 11-year-old boy (Case No.12987) and a 45-year-old woman (Case No. 12988) who is the mother of the Sogo sales assistant are the latest confirmed cases. They visited City Super and Outback Restaurant in Sha Tin. Mrs Cheng Yam On Millennium School in Tuen Mun announced yesterday that a 11-year-old Primary 6 student has preliminarily tested positive. The boy returned to school from 6th to 7th January, and the school will suspend face-to-face classes until further notice.

A 51-year-old female security guard at Penny’s Bay Quarantine Centre (Phase 1) also tested positive for COVID-19. She is the latest local case with unknown sources. She lives alone in Block 3 of Po Tin Estate in Tuen Mun. She was involved in arranging and handling of items, daily necessities and luggage for quarantined persons. She was not in direct contact with quarantined persons. The security guard has been tested continuously. On 8th January, her result was negative. On 10th January, she had a sore throat and discomfort and her test turned positive. The CT value was 25 and 26. She usually wore protective clothing and worked from 9am to 9pm and ate in the container warehouse. It is not sure if she was infected at Penny’s Bay or in the Tuen Mun local community. On her day off on 7th January, she visited Blossom Garden, Venice Garden, Po Tin Estate street market and YOHO Mall in Yuen Long.

A 30-year-old unvaccinated man who works at SOGO and lives in On Ning Estate is also the latest confirmed case. Case No.12903 is the foreign domestic helper who lives together with his family.

A new preliminary case reported today is a 83-year-old woman who lives in Block B, Maple Gardens Phase III, 51 Kin Wah Street, North Point where vertical transmission is suspected. She is a family member of Case No.12985. The patient visited ParknShop and Wellcome supermarkets at Chinachem Exchange Square. Another resident who lives in Unit B on a higher floor i.e. a 32-year-old renovation worker is also a preliminary case. During incubation period, he carried out renovation in several apartments including Bedford Garden in North Point, One Kai Tak, Redhill Peninsula etc. Other workers and owners of the units involved need to undergo testing and quarantine. He visited several restaurants including Green River Restaurant, SUSHIRO in Sheung Wan, Domain, Tamjai restaurant in North Point and Java Street Market in North Point .

Government expert adviser and chair professor of the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong, Yuen Kwok-yung, said after his inspection at Maple Gardens today (12th) that the Environmental Protection Department has conducted a smoke test, and the smoke from downstairs can be smelled upstairs, which is a “chimney effect”. Hence, it is necessary to evacuate all residents in Block B.

A 20-year-old university student also preliminarily tested positive. On 4th January 2022, between 6.24pm and 8.02pm he ate at Nabe Urawa at Shop L1404-1405, 14/F, Hysan Place At Lee Gardens, 500 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay. The earlier Case No. 12882 (colleague of Celia Wong who attended Witman Hung’s birthday Party) also visited the restaurant at 7.41pm on the same day. CHP suspected that a cluster outbreak may have taken place at the restaurant. Customers who visited the restaurant after 7.41pm on 4th January are required to undergo virus testing. The student also works part time at Dustykid Tea ─ Light As Dust in Wan Chai and in Sheung Wan. On 9th January, he visited Langham Centre and Argyle Centre in Mong Kok. He also went to Pull & Bear in Argyle Centre and Curry House Coco Ichibanya at Winson House, 311 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay, Golden Era Plaza  and Lady Bobo at Hysan Place during incubation period.

A 19-year-old student who lives in MAYA Tower in Yau Tong is also a preliminary case. He studies at 6C Class at Hong Kong Tang King Po College at 25 Kennedy Road, Mid-Levels and his last day of class was on 7th January. He visited Central Library during incubation period and he is a family member of Case No. 12913.

Meanwhile, family member of Case No. 12923 preliminarily tested positive.

Dr.Chuang said that all cases recorded in Mei Sun Building have been confirmed to have the same virus strain after genome sequencing was carried out. She also admitted that the list of people who had been to Witman Hung’s birthday party has increased again but there is no specific number today.

Meanwhile, the whole genome sequencing analysis of cases announced earlier conducted by the PHLSB confirmed that cases no. 12775, 12776, 12784, 12790, 12808, 12809, 12812 to 12816, 12818, 12823, 12824, 12826, 12827, 12829 to 12837, 12908 to 12910, 12941, 12945 and 12966 all carried the Variant of Concern Omicron. Together with the aforementioned cases, there are so far 310 cases involving Omicron in Hong Kong.
