1st September 2025 – (Tianjin) Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) on Monday, urging countries to collaborate towards establishing a fairer and more equitable global governance system. Xi made this announcement while chairing the “Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus” meeting in Tianjin, where the SCO held its largest summit in 24 years, attended by leaders from over 20 nations and heads of 10 international organisations.
The GGI is the fourth significant global initiative proposed by Xi in recent years, following the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.
In his remarks, Xi outlined five key principles of the GGI: upholding sovereign equality, adhering to international law, promoting multilateralism, adopting a people-centred approach, and emphasising tangible actions.
