1st April 2025 – (Hong Kong) A dashcam video lasting approximately one-and-a-half minutes has surfaced on social media, revealing a dramatic incident involving a taxi and a Tesla vehicle. The footage shows a taxi, carrying a male passenger, being violently struck on its left side by a Tesla that swerved into the lane. The rear seat passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was thrown from his seat and flew across the cabin, colliding with the right-side window, which shattered upon impact. He then collapsed onto the rear seat. The taxi driver immediately inquired, “Are you okay?” but received no verbal response as the passenger clutched his head and groaned in pain. The driver promptly contacted emergency services, concluding the recording.
Following the video’s release, it has ignited heated discussions among netizens. Some condemned the Tesla driver for recklessly cutting into the line, attributing the accident to poor driving behaviour, while others remarked on the passenger’s fortune in not being ejected from the vehicle despite not wearing a seatbelt.
Following the collision, the taxi became wedged between the Tesla and a roadside railing, rendering both the driver and passenger temporarily trapped. The 47-year-old taxi passenger suffered bleeding from his forehead and the right side of his face, while the 56-year-old taxi driver, identified as Mr Koo, experienced chest pain and was taken to hospital. The Tesla driver, a 47-year-old man named Mr Zhang, sustained a wrist injury and was also sent for medical treatment.
The incident occurred in the early hours of last Thursday (27th March) around 4am. The taxi was travelling along Sports Road in Wan Chai when, upon reaching the intersection with Wong Nai Chung Road, it was suddenly struck by the Tesla, which was heading towards Happy Valley, pushing the taxi into the roadside barrier.
Eyewitnesses noted that there was a “stop” line at the intersection where vehicles were required to halt for oncoming traffic. The airbags in the Tesla deployed as a result of the impact, while the taxi’s left side and front showed significant deformation. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
