Peak Tram to end Octopus turnstile access from 26th May, queuing overhaul may cause disruption

20th May 2026 – (Hong Kong) Octopus card admission at Peak Tram turnstiles will be suspended from 26th May 2026 at both Central and Peak termini, a change expected to cause confusion among regular users and tourists accustomed to tapping in at the gates. Octopus payments will remain available at staffed ticket counters only.

The switch coincides with a new “Peak Tram Easy Queue Services” system at the Peak Terminus (Upper Terminus) designed to replace traditional line‑ups. From launch, passengers must secure a queue ticket and return during an allotted check‑in window rather than waiting continuously in a physical line.

Easy Queue Self-Service Kiosk

Individual travellers can obtain an e‑queue ticket by scanning a valid Peak Tram ticket via a QR code displayed at the Peak Tower or by using Easy Queue self‑service kiosks at the same location. The ticket shows a check‑in time for entry to Check‑in Lane (Zone B). If a slot is missed or cancelled, a new queue ticket can be issued once; otherwise, travellers must use the Stand‑by Lane (Zone A), which carries lower boarding priority and longer waits.

For guided tour groups, a consolidated group queue ticket can be collected at the Guest Service Counter on presentation of a valid Tour Guide Licence. Groups may alternatively choose the Stand‑by Lane but will board after Easy Queue passengers. Ruby Special Ticket holders can use Ruby Pass Access directly without obtaining a queue ticket.

The operator stresses that the check‑in time grants access to the lane only and is not a departure time; all passengers must still scan Peak Tram tickets at the entrance. On‑site ticket sales remain available at the Peak Tower Guest Service Counter (Mon–Thu 12:00–21:30; Fri–Sun and public holidays 10:00–21:30) and at the Peak Terminus ticketing counter (Mon–Thu 07:30–11:59 and 21:31–23:00; Fri–Sun and public holidays 07:30–09:59 and 21:31–23:00).

A trial of the new arrangements begins on 26th May 2026, ahead of full rollout on 29th May 2026. With gate‑side Octopus taps withdrawn and a fresh queuing protocol at the Upper Terminus, operators and agents anticipate some early‑stage crowding and passenger confusion; travellers are advised to buy or validate tickets in advance and allow extra time.
