1st March 2019 – (Hong Kong) Jang Dok Korean Restaurant in Wanchai is a modern Korean restaurant that serves simple hanjeongsik, or traditional Korean food. It’s not just cold noodles and Bibimbap (Korean Mixed Rice) , it’s soul food. The restaurant uses authentic Korean tastes, quality local ingredients and creatively prepare them to titillate modern tastes and sensibilities.
There are many Korean establishments in Hong Kong that serve similar food but nothing comes close to Jang Dok for its value-for-money traditional Korean food.
We were there for lunch and ordered a spicy Bibim-naengmyeon (HK$70) (cold noodles), a Bibimbap (with chicken) (HK$60) and ginseng chicken soup (HK$78).
The Bibim-naengmyeong is basically chilled noodles with thinly sliced raw vegetables and a hard cooked egg served with ice cubes. The sauce that holds it all together is sweet and spicy and made with red chili paste, rice vinegar, sugar. The texture of the noodles is al-dente and when you mix everything together, you can experience the taste of spicy, sweet, salty, tangy and nutty flavour in one mouthful.
The Bibimbap, a generic rice bowl dish found in almost all Korean restaurants is still one of our favourite dish as we love to stir the everything together with the rice. The basic components are mild and full of familiar flavors (sweet, garlic, soy sauce, sesame seed oil). And each dish can be assembled to taste. B
The samgeteng, a half chicken is stuffed with glutinous rice, ginseng root, red dates and garlic, served piping hot in its own broth. We love the soup served without salt as you can savour the natural oozing flavour from the chicken and herbs. The soup is silkier than many versions, most likely from an extra helping of starchy rice in the stock. Otherwise it’s typical of the uncomplicated comfort dish that has steamed up Korean kitchens for generations.
