31st October 2026 – (Hong Kong) In the early hours of today, police in Kowloon Bay received a report from a 66-year-old woman surnamed Chung, who suspected she had become the victim of a telephone scam resulting in a financial loss of 2.7 million Hong Kong dollars. The incident occurred after she was contacted on Wednesday, 28th October, by a male caller who claimed she had previously purchased insurance online and alleged her account was linked to money laundering activities. The caller instructed her to transfer funds for investigative purposes.

Without realising it was a scam, the victim transferred two separate amounts of two million and seven hundred thousand dollars to two bank accounts specified by the fraudster. She later became concerned about the legitimacy of the call and reported the matter to police in the early hours of today. The case has been classified as fraud and, at this stage, no arrests have been made. The police remind the public to remain vigilant against such scams which frequently involve impersonation of insurance professionals and requests for fund transfers under false pretences.
