4th December 2024 – (Hong Kong) The results of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023 were unveiled today, revealing that Hong Kong students have significantly outperformed the global average. A spokesperson from the Education Bureau (EDB) celebrated their exceptional achievements.
Conducted every four years by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, TIMSS assesses student performance in mathematics and science for Grade 4 (Primary Four in Hong Kong) and Grade 8 (Secondary Two). This year’s study involved participation from over 60 countries and regions.
The spokesperson stated, “Hong Kong students have consistently demonstrated high levels of performance in mathematics. Our Primary Four students ranked fourth globally with a score of 594, markedly surpassing the international average of 503. Meanwhile, our Secondary Two students secured fifth place with a score of 575, well above the international average of 478. Notably, 38% of Primary Four and 32% of Secondary Two students achieved advanced levels in mathematics, compared to the international median of just 7%.”
In science, Hong Kong students also showed remarkable improvement, with Primary Four and Secondary Two students rising from 15th and 17th place in the previous cycle to 9th and 8th this cycle, scoring 545 and 528 respectively—both significantly above the international averages of 494 and 478. The proportions achieving advanced levels in science were 17% and 14%, again exceeding the international medians of 7% and 6%.
The spokesperson emphasised, “The outstanding performance of Hong Kong students in mathematics and science underscores the effectiveness of our schools and teachers, as well as the learning outcomes for students. In line with the national goal of ‘invigorating the country through science and education’, the EDB is intensifying efforts to promote STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education. We aim to create an engaging and diverse learning environment that fosters innovation and enhances students’ knowledge and skills in these areas.”
The EDB plans to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the TIMSS 2023 results, working closely with various stakeholders to refine current teaching methods, cultivate student interest, and bolster educational effectiveness. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the international competitiveness of Hong Kong students.
