21st August 2026 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a special advisory following the intensification of a tropical depression over Beibu Wan into a tropical storm. At midday, the storm’s centre was located roughly 200 kilometres west-northwest of Haikou and is anticipated to remain near Beibu Wan for the time being. According to the latest forecast, there is an increasing likelihood that the system will turn gradually east or northeast early next week, moving closer to regions near the Leizhou Peninsula and the coast of western Guangdong.
Authorities have indicated they are closely monitoring both the tropical storm’s movement and local wind conditions, assessing whether to issue tropical cyclone warning signals as the situation evolves in the coming days. Members of the public are advised to remain alert for updates as the storm progresses.
Locally, a broad trough of low pressure brought rainfall in excess of ten millimetres to many districts this morning, alongside cloudy skies and occasional showers, with some brighter intervals in the afternoon. Winds are expected to remain light to moderate and southerly. The weather outlook suggests showers continuing into tomorrow, with hot daytime temperatures. Showers are forecast to increase in frequency later on Sunday, and the city can expect bouts of squally thunderstorms and windier conditions as early to midweek approaches, coinciding with the passage of the tropical system along the southern China coast. The region will also be affected by a persistent area of low pressure near Taiwan, with unsettled weather likely for several days. Residents are urged to take note of the latest official weather information and prepare for the potential impact of severe conditions next week.
