12th February 2022 – (Hong Kong) Dr.Edwin Tsui, Controller of the CHP said that further tightening of anti-epidemic regulations may be considered if the epidemic situation becomes worse. A full lockdown in Hong Kong may also be implemented but Tsui mentioned that there is no specific number of COVID-19 cases that will trigger the drastic measure. The government will actively review the situation and implement corresponding course of action. Measures may also include an expansion of the restricted area in a particular district during lockdown testing instead of targeting one particular residential block.
Tsui also pointed out that he noticed that the supply of testing services is currently overwhelmed, so the government has adjusted the criteria for mandatory testing. Only if there are 2 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the building, residents will be subject to compulsory testing. This new measure is meant to relieve the burden of the testing facilities.
He emphasised that due to the increasing number of cases, patients may need to wait a few hours before being sent to the hospital. He hoped that the public should be aware of the risk of infection while waiting at home, including wearing masks, paying attention to disinfection, and avoiding contact, but he understands that there will be difficulties as there may be other family members staying together. If a separate room can be provided, it is ideal to isolate the confirmed patient.
Meanwhile, the government hopes to do 200,000 testings daily with the support of mainland personnel.
