29th December 2022 – (Hong Kong) At around 4:58am today, a Citybus male driver (54 years old) was driving the No. N72 bus from Wah Kwai Estate in Aberdeen to Quarry Bay. The bus lost control on Causeway Road opposite Victoria Park and crashed into a 12-metre iron railing of the tram stop in the middle of the road. It then hit the concrete pier of the pedestrian bridge. The front of the bus was severely damaged and the windshield was shattered. The driver suffered injuries to his hands and feet, and the other 7 men and 2 women (aged 47 to 75) on board also suffered minor injuries. They were sent to Ruttonjee Hospital and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Another 65-year-old male passenger also reported feeling unwell and refused to be sent to the hospital after receiving on-site care. The police were at the scene to investigate the accident. According to sources, someone suspected to report to the police that the accident was caused by the driver dozing off while driving. The police are further determining the cause of the accident based on the mental state of the driver and the performance of the vehicle. Affected by the incident, some traffic lanes on Causeway Road towards North Point were closed and vehicles had to be diverted.
Meanwhile, 30 minutes after the accident, another Citybus No. N619 from Central Ferry Terminal arrived at the scene and it was diverted from Yee Wo Street to Sugar Street. When the police officers instructed the bus to turn left into Gloucester Road, the bus driver did not pay attention and hit the bottom of the Gloucester Road flyover, causing the front window of the upper deck to be shattered. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident.
