16th February 2025 – (Munich) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on NATO to adopt a rational and pragmatic approach toward China, urging the alliance to develop an objective understanding and pursue a constructive and responsible policy. Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Friday at the Munich Security Conference.

Wang emphasised China’s role as a stabilising force in global peace and security, highlighting the country’s status as the largest contributor of peacekeeping personnel among permanent United Nations Security Council members and the second-largest financial supporter of UN peacekeeping operations. He noted that China’s track record on peace and security surpasses that of other major nations.

Against the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions, Wang urged NATO to remain focused on its mandate as a regional defensive organisation and to contribute positively to international and regional stability.

For his part, Rutte acknowledged China’s significant development achievements and reiterated NATO’s position as a regional alliance with no intention of expanding into Asia. He expressed NATO’s willingness to enhance dialogue with China to foster mutual understanding and trust.

The two leaders also discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Rutte underscored NATO’s recognition of China’s influence and expressed hope that Beijing would play a key role in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
