Broadway air-fryer buyer hit by scam call within an hour

27th October 2026 – (Hong Kong) A shopper who bought an air fryer from Broadway said a scam call landed within an hour of delivery – prompting the chain to apologise and condemn impostors while still leaving unanswered how any customer data got out.

In a Threads post on Monday, 26th October, the customer said the appliance had been ordered with afternoon delivery, but a courier arrived early the next morning at 9.30am. Barely an hour later her husband took a call from a woman with a mainland accent who claimed to be Broadway staff. She said the air fryer was faulty and had to be recalled, and asked him to confirm personal details so a refund could be arranged.

He thought the pitch odd, ignored it and rang Broadway himself. Staff confirmed there was no recall. The couple were left furious that purchase and delivery details seemed to have leaked in under 24 hours – and that the caller appeared to know the goods had already arrived before phoning. The poster said she strongly suspected someone in the delivery chain, arguing the fraudsters only dialled once the unit was on the doorstep.

After the post drew heat online, Broadway’s official social account replied under the thread. It apologised for the nuisance and inconvenience, said it had recently learned of people posing as Broadway staff, and suspected that some past shopping records obtained by illegal means were being used for scams. The retailer strongly condemned anyone stealing its name to harass customers and fish for money, and said it was watching the situation closely.

That did not satisfy the customer. She wrote back that she did not need a condemnation – she wanted an explanation of how it happened and how it would be stopped, insisting it was clearly a data leak and pressing for a proper account and fixes. Separately she said her husband tried to report the matter to police through the electronic system around midday, waited more than half a day without a call back, then phoned after work only to be told the report would not be taken that way and that he should go to a station or keep using the online channel.

The Privacy Commissioner’s office said on Monday it had received personal-data breach notifications from Hong Kong Airlines Limited, Yoho Hong Kong Limited and Broadway Photo Supply Limited, with at least 1,600 customers affected across the three cases and 23 complaints lodged by that day. Broadway’s public reply still frames the calls as illegal use of shopping records by outsiders; the air-fryer buyer says the clock from till to scam phone is proof something went wrong in how her order was handled – and that a condemnation without a cause is not enough.
