31st October 2026 – (Hong Kong) Police have arrested 58 people in a territory‑wide operation aimed at curbing triad groups accused of recruiting teenagers with false promises of quick cash. The suspects, aged between 14 and 73, were detained during raids across Kowloon and the New Territories on 29th October after officers infiltrated two syndicates earlier this year amid rising concerns over youth crime. Investigators say the groups built trust through simple initiation rites before assigning recruits to illegal acts including wounding, criminal damage, criminal intimidation, arson‑style “petrol splashing”, drug trafficking and money laundering.

Among those held were 49 men and 9 women, with 20 believed to have triad affiliations. Police said 10 of the arrestees are students and 13 are underage. Alleged offences include claiming to be a triad member, being a triad member, inviting others to join a triad, conspiracy to wound, criminal intimidation, criminal damage, money laundering, possession of offensive weapons, unlawful imprisonment, managing a gambling establishment and trafficking in dangerous drugs. Officers also seized a range of exhibits and said several illegal gambling venues and drug dens were dismantled, while declining to identify specific triad lineages.

The operation will continue and further arrests are possible. According to investigators, recruitment has taken place both online and offline, with approaches made via gaming platforms, social‑media groups and venues such as billiard halls. Police urged parents and schools to remain vigilant and called on young people to resist pressure to join so‑called “brotherhoods” that draw them into criminal activity.
