3rd August 2026 – (Hong Kong) A 34‑year‑old American man has been arrested at Hong Kong International Airport after customs officers uncovered a large quantity of suspected cannabis concealed in his baggage.
Hong Kong Customs said the passenger arrived from New York on 3 August. During clearance procedures, officers inspected his two checked suitcases and discovered approximately 33 kilograms of suspected cannabis buds hidden inside. The haul has an estimated street value of HK$6.8 million.
The man was arrested at the scene and an investigation is continuing.
Customs officials said they would intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking through intelligence‑led operations and enhanced enforcement measures. The department urged members of the public not to engage in drug trafficking for financial gain and warned against accepting requests from others to transport controlled items into or out of Hong Kong. Travellers were also reminded not to carry goods for third parties if the contents are unknown.
Officers added that a risk‑assessment strategy will remain in place, with particular attention given to passengers arriving from higher‑risk regions as part of ongoing efforts to curb transnational narcotics smuggling.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in dangerous drugs carries a maximum penalty of a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment upon conviction.
