18th June 2026 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited has announced that Towngas tariffs will increase from 1st August, marking the first adjustment in recent years.

The standard gas charge will rise by 1.25 cents per megajoule, representing an increase of 4.4 per cent. The company said this equates to a 3.9 per cent rise in the average net gas bill for 2025, which includes both the standard tariff and the fuel cost adjustment. The fixed monthly maintenance fee will also go up by HK$1 to HK$11. Towngas stated that, following the revision, it does not intend to alter the standard tariff or maintenance fee again for the next two years.

The company said it had consulted the Environment and Ecology Bureau on the proposed changes, and relevant documents were circulated to members of the Legislative Council’s Panel on Environmental Affairs earlier on 18 June. After the adjustment takes effect, around 65 per cent of residential customers are expected to see their monthly bills rise by no more than HK$10, while about half of commercial and industrial users will face an increase of less than HK$320 per month.

Towngas said it had approached the revision cautiously, citing higher operating expenses over the past two years, rising labour costs in the gas sector and substantial capital commitments required to maintain safe and reliable services. Significant investment will also be needed to support gas supply to new development areas, including the Northern Metropolis. The company estimates total capital expenditure will reach HK$13.1 billion in 2026 and over the following five years. It described the increase as a measured adjustment after taking customers’ affordability into account.

Concessionary measures will remain in place for approximately 41,000 eligible elderly people, persons with disabilities, low-income households and single-parent families. These customers will continue to receive a 50 per cent discount on the first 500 megajoules of gas consumed each month, together with a waiver of maintenance and parts charges.
