2nd August 2025 – (Hong Kong) Last Sunday (27th July), a horrific incident unfolded at the Panda Hotel in Tsuen Wan, where a 37-year-old man named Kei, after leaving a farewell note on social media, tragically took the lives of his wife and two sons with a knife before falling to his own death. Today marks the seventh day since the incident, with the families of the deceased gathering at the Panda Hotel to pay their respects. The area was marked by a solemn atmosphere, with the police cordoning off the vicinity with orange tape as numerous media outlets gathered for coverage.
Traditionally known as the seventh day after a person’s passing, or the first seven-day period post a person’s death, the “seventh day” is a significant cultural practice in many East Asian communities. On this day, mourners hold a memorial service in remembrance of the departed, reflecting on their lives and offering prayers.
Around 11am, a group of four men and women, accompanied by over ten religious figures, including Buddhist practitioners, assembled at the site. Buddhist rituals, such as the sprinkling of water, were performed as part of the ceremony. Police presence was notable, assisting in crowd control and closing off a section of the pedestrian pathway. A Taoist priest later conducted rituals to guide the family in paying their respects and honouring the deceased souls. The family members, holding incense sticks, solemnly worshipped before departing after a poignant stay of approximately 25 minutes.
The incident occurred on Sunday (27th) at around 4.45am, when authorities were alerted to a man falling from a height at the Panda Hotel, landing in an unconscious state across the street. Rushed to Yan Chai Hospital, the man was declared deceased at 5.03 am. Investigations revealed that the room in question was locked from the inside, necessitating the cutting of a security chain to gain entry. Bloodstains were found on the curtains, and a bloodied, curved kitchen knife measuring 24 centimetres was discovered on the couch in the lobby. The man’s 36-year-old wife was found in the centre of the lobby, while their 6-year-old and 3-year-old sons were discovered in separate bedrooms within the suite, each with fatal neck wounds. Their deaths were confirmed at the scene at 5.27am.
