10th March 2025 – (Hong Kong) Deliveroo has announced its exit from the Hong Kong market, with operations set to cease after 7th April.
Delivery riders have shown little surprise at this development, citing a significant decline in order volume compared to Keeta and other platforms. One rider remarked that their earnings per order were considerably lower, contributing to the decision to withdraw from the market.
Reflecting on the shifting dynamics, a rider with six years of experience recalled peak earnings during the pandemic, which exceeded HK$200 per hour. However, he noted a stark contrast in the current landscape, particularly following Keeta’s entry, which has resulted in a marked decline in orders for Deliveroo.
Another rider indicated that since Keeta’s arrival, the order volume for Deliveroo has diminished significantly. This shift has raised concerns among riders that reduced competition may lead to exploitative practices by remaining platforms.
Recent market research has shown that Keeta has captured approximately 44% of the market share within a year of its launch, solidifying its position as a dominant player in the food delivery sector. Following Deliveroo’s exit, customers and riders will be redirected to the foodpanda platform, which is acquiring certain restaurants and grocery shops from Deliveroo.
Meanwhile, Delivery Hero SE, the world’s leading local delivery platform announced that it has finalised an agreement to acquire selected assets from Deliveroo plc through its foodpanda business following Deliveroo’s decision to exit the Hong Kong market. As part of this transition, Deliveroo customers and riders will be redirected to the foodpanda platform, which will also onboard certain restaurants and grocery shops. This move will enhance the range of dining and grocery options available to foodpanda users, including some exclusive to Deliveroo, thereby allowing vendors to access a new customer base.
After a decade of operations in Hong Kong, Delivery Hero’s investment highlights its commitment to fostering a sustainable delivery ecosystem that maximises value for foodpanda customers, couriers, and business partners. foodpanda has established itself as a leading on-demand delivery service in Asia, offering a vast array of food and grocery options while driving the growth of quick-commerce across the region. Operating in over 300 cities across 11 markets, foodpanda continues to enhance its services to meet consumer demands effectively.
