7th June 2023 – (Ankara) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held phone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the Kakhovka dam explosion to leave no room for doubt. Erdogan also stressed Turkey’s determination to ensure peace between Moscow and Kyiv and offered Ankara’s support to end the conflict.

Putin, for his part, called the destruction of the dam an “environmental and humanitarian catastrophe,” according to a press release from the Kremlin. Erdogan also discussed the dam blast issue with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Kakhovka dam explosion has caused flooding and humanitarian, economic, and ecological consequences. The reservoir formed by the dam is a major source of cooling water for the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the destruction of the dam has raised concerns about the safety and security of the plant.
