8th July 2024 – (Hong Kong) Kenneth Fok, the Vice President of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, has spoken out for the first time regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the Hong Kong China Swimming Association (HKCSA). This comes after former Hong Kong swimming representative Alex Fong Lik-sun criticised the association for its unfair policies and engaged in a public dispute. Fok, who also serves as the Vice President of the Olympic Committee, expressed his belief that the HKCSA needs to improve its handling of athlete participation in competitions and urged the association to address the allegations appropriately.
In his capacity as Vice President of the Olympic Committee, Fok met with senior officials of the HKCSA this week to review the association’s internal arrangements and regulations to ensure compliance with good corporate governance standards.
Fok has already expressed his concerns to the HKCSA and called for a thorough examination of the allegations. He emphasized that each sports association should have an independent approach to handling athlete participation in competitions, with the athletes’ best interests at heart. Fok believes that the HKCSA has room for improvement in its arrangements for athletes’ participation and has communicated his concerns to the association, urging them to take the allegations seriously and handle the situation properly.
This marks Fok’s first public comment on the incident involving Alex Fong’s nine-year-old swimmer being denied participation in a local championship. Fok shares Fong’s view that the HKCSA needs to improve its arrangements for athlete participation in competitions.
Furthermore, Fok stated that he is actively following up on the matter within the Olympic Committee and has scheduled a meeting with senior officials of the HKCSA this week to review their internal arrangements and regulations, ensuring they adhere to good corporate governance practices. He is also actively working towards facilitating a meeting with stakeholders.
