7th August 2026 – (Hong Kong) The bustling restaurant hub of the H8 commercial building on Hau Fook Street, Tsim Sha Tsui, has been severely disrupted after suspected vandalism early on 1st August resulted in widespread water leakage and a total lift outage. The incident began with the apparent rupture of a fire sprinkler head, which caused significant flooding in the lift shafts and rendered all three lifts in the building unusable. This has dealt a heavy blow to the numerous eateries housed inside, with some reporting revenue losses of up to eighty per cent despite ongoing efforts to continue operations under challenging conditions. Notices posted by the property management company have indicated that the cause of the malfunction may involve deliberate human actions and that police have been notified.
Sources have revealed that the case is linked to a 21-year-old man, reportedly associated with the Sun Yee On triad, who was ejected from an upstairs bar in the premises following a dispute with his partner. Angered by his removal, he allegedly returned with four associates and, in an apparent act of retribution, damaged a sprinkler head with a baseball bat before leaving the scene. The resulting deluge caused by the damaged sprinkler soon disabled the building’s lift system, making access for business operators and customers extremely difficult. Police made an arrest the next day in Jordan, taking the suspect into custody whilst ongoing efforts continue to locate his four accomplices.
Restaurant owners and employees have since struggled with the aftermath, launching special offers in a bid to recover lost business. Various outlets have introduced discounts or complimentary drinks for customers willing to tackle the stairs, as all lifts remain out of service. Despite these initiatives, a staff member from an established eighth floor eatery described how the drop in turnover has been so steep that staffing and supply deliveries have both had to be scaled back, with even regular staff taking turns to reduce shifts. He noted that the inconvenience of climbing multiple flights has deterred many guests, even where incentives have been introduced, with some venues above the tenth floor reportedly closing entirely due to the loss of lift access.
The incident was formally reported to police at 7.46am on 1st August by the bar’s licensee, a 35-year-old woman. The case has been classified as criminal damage and is being handled by officers from the Anti-Triad Squad of the Yau Tsim Police District. Police apprehended the main suspect at the junction of Austin Road and Parkes Street the following evening, and efforts to trace the remaining suspects are ongoing.
