Giorgio Valoti becomes the first mayor in Italy to die of COVID-19


15th March 2020 – (Italy) 70-year-old Giorgio Valoti, the mayor of Cene, a comune in the Province of Bergamo was admitted to hospital for coronavirus and he passed away on 13th March. He become the first mayor in the country to die of the COVID-19 virus. His condition worsened since 12th March before he was transferred to Intensive Care Unit. He was subsequently certified dead on 13th March.

Leader of the far-right coalition party (Lega), Matteo Salvini, also tweeted and commemorated the death of the mayor by posting a picture of the two of them, “Thank you for your life in this city.”
