China refutes validity of “Taiwan Strait’s median line” amidst allegations

Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang

1st March 2024 – (Beijing) In response to allegations made by the U.S. press regarding China’s military planes crossing the so-called “Taiwan Strait’s median line,” China’s Ministry of National Defence firmly refuted the validity of such claims, according to Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the ministry.

Zhang emphasized that there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an integral part of China’s territory. Therefore, the notion of the “Taiwan Strait’s median line” holds no validity.

The military training and exercises conducted by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in the Taiwan Strait are legitimate actions aimed at safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests, Zhang stated. These activities serve as both deterrence and countermeasures against external interference and provocations by “Taiwan independence” forces. They are also necessary measures to ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Zhang further asserted that China will continue to enhance military training and preparedness in order to steadfastly defend the nation’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The issue of Taiwan remains a highly sensitive and complex topic, with China considering it an integral part of its territory, while Taiwan seeks to maintain its own autonomy. The tension surrounding this matter has led to increased military activities in the Taiwan Strait, raising concerns among regional stakeholders and the international community.
