27th October 2026 – (London) Chris Brown avoided immediate custody after Southwark Crown Court imposed an eight‑month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for an attack at the Tape private members’ club in Mayfair in the early hours of 19th February 2023. The court was told the 37‑year‑old struck music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw with a heavy tequila bottle on the dancefloor, with CCTV showing four blows and two connecting with the victim’s head before further strikes to his shoulder. Judge Tony Baumgartner said the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head was dangerous and described the violence as intense, while stressing that celebrity and commercial success confer no special treatment under the law. Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe KC outlined the sequence of events and injuries, which included hospital treatment and a subsequent diagnosis of a head injury and a knee ligament injury.
Brown’s co‑defendant, his vocal coach and rapper Omololu Akinlolu, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, after admitting affray; both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs. The judge noted Brown’s guilty plea, compliance with bail and family responsibilities, and concluded that, although the custody threshold had been crossed, immediate imprisonment was not required under current sentencing provisions unless there were exceptional reasons. Earlier, more serious charges — including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon — were dropped following the defendants’ pleas in July. The incident occurred in a crowded, small venue around 3.00am, with the Crown Prosecution Service stating the pair continued their assault as the victim tried to flee. Brown left court to cheers and later posted a brief video message, while banks of fans gathered outside the building.
