3rd February 2025 – (Hong Kong) In the wake of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu’s tragic death from influenza-related pneumonia at the age of 48 in Japan, respiratory medicine specialist Dr. Leung Chi-chiu is urging Hong Kongers to prioritise vaccinations and personal hygiene. Hsu, passed away on Sunday after battling the illness.

Leung highlighted that flu activity in Hong Kong has surged in recent years, leaving many residents with little prior exposure to the virus. This lack of exposure has weakened immunity and increased susceptibility to infections in areas with high flu activity.

“The flu virus can lead to viral pneumonia and damage our respiratory system, heightening the risk of secondary bacterial infections, including pneumococcus and streptococcus,” he cautioned.

Despite a decline in COVID-19 cases over the last two years, Leung warned that many individuals still lack adequate immunity against the flu. He advised the public to avoid crowded and poorly ventilated spaces, stagger travel times, wear masks, and maintain diligent hand hygiene.

Leung also noted that vigilance should extend beyond those with chronic illnesses; caregivers and travellers accompanying them must also take precautions. He stated, “If one person becomes infected, they risk spreading the virus to a hotel or home, potentially infecting many others.”

Japan is currently experiencing significant flu outbreaks, with 5,000 designated medical institutions reporting 172,417 influenza patients from January 6 to 12. This figure averages 35.02 patients per institution and has exceeded the alert level of 30 for four consecutive weeks, according to Kyodo News.
