3rd January 2025 – (Beijing) The Chinese Foreign Ministry has voiced strong opposition to the U.S. Commerce Department’s recent announcement regarding potential new regulations that could restrict or ban Chinese drones in the United States, citing national security issues.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) issued a statement seeking public feedback on a proposed rule aimed at “safeguarding the information and communication technology and services supply chain for unmanned aircraft systems,” or drones. The announcement raised concerns that commercial drones could be remotely accessed and manipulated by entities in China and Russia, thus “exposing sensitive US data.”

During a routine press conference on Friday, spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China firmly opposes the U.S.’s broad interpretation of national security, which she argued disrupts normal international trade and economic exchanges. She further asserted that such actions undermine the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

Mao reaffirmed that China would take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests in response to these developments.
