2nd November 2023 – (Hong Kong) Several pro-establishment legislators in Hong Kong have condemned the upcoming Gay Games, alleging that the event poses a “national security threat” by promoting Western liberal ideologies. At a press conference last week, lawmakers including Junius Ho Kwan-yiu objected to the “sugar-coating” of the Games’ agenda in the name of diversity and inclusivity. The seven lawmakers include Junius Ho Kwan-yiu,Tik Chi-yuen, Priscilla Leung Mei-fun, Peter Shiu Ka-fai, Michael Lee Chun-keung, Duncan Chiu Tat-kun and Carmen Kan Wai-mun.

Mr Ho described the Games, which kicks off this weekend, as criminal activity that spreads “gay rights ideology” and subverts traditional family values. He called for top government advisor Regina Ip to resign from her role officiating the opening ceremonies. Ms Ip defended the Games, saying there is no evidence they breach security laws.

Other critics joined the lawmakers, urging authorities to investigate the event’s funding sources over potential collusion concerns. However, organisers maintain they are a volunteer group solely focused on promoting inclusion through sports and culture. They have pledged all participants will adhere strictly to local laws.

Advocacy groups slammed the “regrettable” accusations, noting the Games’ local roots and aim to promote diversity. A government spokesperson affirmed that no activities contrary to Hong Kong law would be tolerated. The escalating rhetoric comes amid political tensions and ahead of upcoming district elections – the first under Beijing’s new “patriots only” governance rules.
