13th October 2023 – (San Francisco) A 31-year-old San Francisco man named Zhanyuan Yang was shot and killed by police after crashing his car into the Chinese consulate recently. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has garnered condemnation from both the White House and the Chinese government.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in San Francisco confirmed Yang’s identity on Thursday but provided no further details regarding the incident. Eyewitnesses reported that Yang forcefully rammed his vehicle into the visa office of the Chinese consulate. Upon exiting the car, he was observed bleeding from the head and shouting about the Chinese Communist Party, using the abbreviation “C.C.P.”

San Francisco police swiftly responded to the scene and fired shots at Yang, who was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The police have not disclosed the exact sequence of events leading to the shooting or the number of officers involved. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries among individuals inside the consulate building.

Authorities remain uncertain about the motive behind Yang’s actions, as the Chinese consulate is located in a residential neighborhood adjacent to a major street. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to establish a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances surrounding the incident. This tragic loss of life underscores the importance of thorough investigations, transparent communication, and efforts to promote peaceful resolutions.

Yang’s roommate described him as “very reserved” and revealed that his room contained what appeared to be replica firearms and a book about political assassinations. The roommate, who declined to provide her name, stated that the police had not visited their home. The San Francisco Police Department spokesperson refrained from commenting on whether officers had searched the apartment, citing an ongoing investigation.

Upon entering Yang’s room, it was apparent that it was in disarray. The room contained five handguns, a pile of assault weapons, and a knife, with at least five of the guns clearly marked as replica firearms. Additionally, a large drone was present. The room contained Chinese-language books on various subjects, including chemistry, religion, filmmaking, and science fiction, as well as English-language books such as the Bible and a work by Mao Zedong. Postcards on the wall indicated that Yang had been living in the apartment since at least 2016.

Files in the room suggested that Yang hailed from Shandong Province, China, and a diploma revealed that he graduated from Xingtan College of Qufu Normal University in 2014, majoring in environmental sciences. A whiteboard in the room displayed a hand-drawn map of East and Southeast Asia with communist party slogans from the 1970s by former leader Deng Xiaoping.

In the living room, Yang’s keys and wallet were found atop a bookshelf, along with a book titled “Political Murder – From Tyrannicide to Terrorism,” which focused on political assassinations. A bow and arrow were mounted on the wall.

According to Yang’s roommate, she could not explain why he would intentionally crash his car into the Chinese consulate. She mentioned that Yang had been acting oddly in recent months, consuming her food and alcohol, although he had previously refrained from doing so. She described him as reserved and stated that if he had become radicalized, it was a recent development.

The roommate noted that Yang had attended the Academy of Art University and City College of San Francisco, but she was unsure of his employment status or how he legally resided in the country. Yang had few infrequent visitors, and his relatives were believed to mostly reside in China, except for a cousin in Santa Clara County whom he occasionally visited.

The roommate revealed that the car Yang crashed into the consulate did not belong to him but to another individual living in the unit. Efforts to contact this third roommate have been unsuccessful.
