19th April 2021 – (Hong Kong) The Student Union of the University of Hong Kong issued an open letter earlier criticising the school’s principal for promoting national security education as a “political task” and “destroying the autonomy of institutions.” The mainland official media today (19th) published an article alleging that the Hong Kong University Student Union discredited the principle of “One Country, Two Systems” and undermined the constitutional order, reflecting that Hong Kong education has gone astray and needs to be reformed.

It also warned student union members that “you must burn yourself if you play with fire” and will be punished by law. The article pointed out that the Hong Kong University Student Union used to publish articles on Hong Kong independence and supported the National Security repeat offender Jimmy Lai in the media. They also held an art exhibition on anti-extradition protests.

The behaviour lacks the rationality, calmness, autonomy and judgment that students and student organisations should have.
