3rd November 2026 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong cemented its status in Asian higher education as the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027 placed five local institutions in the top 10, led by the University of Hong Kong retaining first for a second consecutive year. City University of Hong Kong rose to fourth and The Chinese University of Hong Kong climbed to fifth, while both Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology advanced to joint ninth, giving the city three positions in the regional top five for the first time in more than a decade.

The rankings, released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds after evaluating more than 1,700 universities across 26 systems, showed widespread progress across the territory. All 11 ranked Hong Kong institutions featured in Asia’s top 500 for the first time. Hong Kong Baptist University moved up to 50th from 53rd, The Education University of Hong Kong advanced to 122nd from 152nd, and Lingnan University improved to 145th from 181st, reflecting broader gains in reputation and research performance.

Reshuffling at the top of the wider region saw Peking University keep second and Tsinghua University jump from ninth to third, with Fudan University easing to sixth. The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University dropped out of the top five, while South Korea’s KAIST re‑entered at 15th and both Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the University of Science and Technology of China broke into the top 20. Central Asia extended its recent momentum, led by Kazakhstan securing places within the top 100.

QS senior vice president Ben Sowter said Hong Kong set the benchmark for regional performance through strong research excellence and reputation, even as indicators for international faculty and students showed some declines, signalling intensifying competition across Asia. He added that future investments in capacity and infrastructure, including the Northern Metropolis development, would be important to support long‑term growth and sustain the city’s standing among regional peers.
