26th January 2026 – (Mexico City) A violent attack at a football pitch in central Mexico has left at least 11 people dead and a further 12 injured, according to local authorities. The shooting took place on Sunday in a neighbourhood of Salamanca, a town in the state of Guanajuato, an area that has seen repeated outbreaks of armed violence.
Officials from the mayor’s office confirmed that gunmen opened fire at the sports field, triggering an immediate emergency response. Security forces were deployed shortly after the incident, and an operation is under way to track down those responsible for the assault.
Authorities have not released details about a possible motive, but the incident has once again raised concerns over public safety in Guanajuato, one of Mexico’s most violent states. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while investigations at the scene continued into the evening.
