8th March 2025 – (Beijing) On 8th March, the Tariff Policy Committee of China’s State Council announced that, effective 20th March, 2025, a 100% tariff will be imposed on several Canadian products, including canola oil, oilseed cakes, and peas. Additionally, a 25% tariff will be levied on seafood and pork imports from Canada after an anti-discrimination probe.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed strong dissatisfaction with Canada’s unilateral trade restrictions, which were implemented without investigation. These measures affect electric vehicles, steel, and aluminium imported from China and are seen as detrimental to China-Canada trade relations. In response to these actions, the ministry initiated an anti-discrimination investigation on 26th September, 2024.

The investigation revealed that Canada’s measures constituted discriminatory restrictions, disrupting normal trade patterns and harming the legitimate rights of Chinese enterprises. Consequently, China has decided to impose tariffs on specific imports from Canada in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Foreign Trade Law and the Customs Law.

The spokesperson urged Canada to rectify its actions immediately, lift the restrictive measures, and mitigate any adverse effects.
