3rd November 2026 – (Hong Kong) Patients are mourning gastroenterology and hepatology specialist Dr Cheung Sai-wah after learning that his Tsim Sha Tsui clinic has closed permanently following his sudden death from acute illness.

Dr Cheung, who often spoke publicly about conditions such as fatty liver, practised as a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology. In recent days former patients have said on social media that they received notices that the Tsim Sha Tsui surgery was shutting and that he had passed away. Online doctor directories likewise list the practice as closed.

One patient posted a photograph of a medicine bag Dr Cheung had dispensed, saying an intended follow-up booking had instead collided with news of a permanent closure and his death. The writer recalled arriving with a head full of questions and spending half an hour being answered, calmly and one by one: looking at the bag brought back the careful advice of that consultation — “You were the most patient, gentlest doctor I have ever met.”

Another uploaded a calligraphy character for “health” given to Dr Cheung years earlier, saying the picture now felt especially pointed. The tribute cast the character as standing not only for wellness but for reassurance, guardianship and the warmth a doctor had once brought to countless families.

According to a health news report citing the clinic’s message to patients — many of whom began receiving stop-operation notices from April — the team wrote that it was with profound grief that it must say Dr Cheung had recently died of acute illness. For years he had been not only their physician but a trusted guardian of their health, the note said, and the practice would mourn with them. Because of his sudden death the clinic would not reopen; under Medical Council rules his records must be kept, so another doctor would hold them and patients would be informed.

Away from the consulting room Dr Cheung gave interviews on online platforms and for charities. As a medical adviser to the charity Doctors With Heart (Health for All) he wrote publicly on alcohol intolerance and related advice. In January this year he also spoke to his alma mater, Ho Fung College (sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen), in a school interview shared on Instagram.
