30th August 2023 – (Hong Kong) Renowned Chinese-Egyptian celebrity chef, Bobby Chinn, is set to captivate Hong Kong next month with the city’s first-ever Egyptian food festival. Organized by The Consulate General of Egypt in Hong Kong SAR and the Silver Oak Group, the festival will take place at The Bayside in Hung Hom and F.I.G.S Bistro Mediterranean in Tai Koo Shing.
Running from 12th to 16th September 2023, the Egyptian Food Festival will offer an evening culinary experience curated by Bobby Chinn himself. Priced at HK$498 per person (with an additional HK$200 for wine pairing), the special five-course menu promises to take diners on a gastronomic journey through Egypt. From ancient Pharaoh-era ingredients to the vibrant flavours found in Cairo’s bustling souks, Chinn’s creations will showcase the diversity of Egyptian cuisine. The tasting menu will also feature signature recipes from his popular cookbook, including innovative dishes like Grapes Wrapped with Goat Cheese Encrusted with Pistachios and Foie Gras Terrine with Fresh Figs. Reservations for group bookings can be made via [email protected], while individual reservations can be made through The Bayside and F.I.G.S Bistro Mediterranean websites.
Bobby Chinn, who currently serves as a judge and co-host on the Emmy-winning show “Top Chef Middle East,” gained fame in the nineties as the host of Discovery Channel’s World Café. With his mixed Chinese heritage, Hong Kong holds a special place in Chinn’s heart. In fact, he chose the city for the global launch of his bestselling cookbook, “Wild Wild East,” which features a foreword written by his friend and fellow chef, Anthony Bourdain.
Chinn’s culinary journey has been deeply influenced by his Egyptian and Chinese grandmothers, and his earliest memories revolve around their kitchens. “I’m thrilled to bring my modern interpretations of beloved Egyptian dishes to Hong Kong,” Chinn expressed enthusiastically. “Egypt’s food culture is steeped in its rich history. While we know what the ancient Egyptians farmed and harvested, the cooking techniques remain open to individual interpretation. For instance, the pharaohs relished delicacies like foie gras and pigeon, and I will be showcasing two of these Egyptian-inspired signature dishes in my tasting menu.”
Moreover, Bobby Chinn will host an exclusive cooking class at The Bayside on Saturday, 16th September, offering participants a chance to learn and prepare a four-course menu featuring dishes from the festival’s tasting menu. Limited tickets for the cooking class are available at HK$450 per person. During the session, Chinn will delve into Egypt’s food culture, emphasizing their philosophy of embracing seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, as well as sharing his insights on the feasts enjoyed by the Pharaohs. Attendees will learn how to create Chinn’s famous grape, cheese, and pistachio starter, stuffed pigeon with cracked wheat and spices, and a popular Egyptian dessert as the grand finale. Reservations for the cooking class can be made through [email protected] or the designated website.
From 12th to 16th September, Bobby Chinn will be present at both festival venues, engaging with diners to share his culinary creations and the unique blend of influences he encountered growing up. The Egyptian Food Festival presents a remarkable opportunity for locals and expats alike to savour the authentic flavours of Egypt right here in Hong Kong.
