11th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) A devastating fire at New Lucky House in Jordan claimed the lives of five individuals. Amongst the victims were Ricky and Bregita, a young Indonesian couple whose dreams were extinguished prematurely. They were migrants who found both livelihoods and love within the gleaming walls of The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Hong Kong.

On the fateful morning of 10th April, Jordan Road’s New Lucky House became the epicentre of a third-degree fire. The blaze resulted in 40 injuries and left eight in critical condition. Amongst the chaos, the story of Ricky, 23, and Bregita, 24, emerged – a narrative that has since captured the hearts of a grieving community.

The couple, who had been in a relationship for at least six years, had built their lives in Hong Kong. Ricky, a bartender, and Bregita, a restaurant service staff member, both worked at The Ritz-Carlton. Their social media accounts paint a picture of a life filled with shared experiences and moments of joy, now poignant reminders of what has been lost.

Their Instagram profiles, now digital memorials, showcase the couple’s journey from their earlier days when Bregita interned at the Ritz-Carlton in 2021 and shared snapshots of their life exploring Hong Kong. According to her LinkedIn profile, Bregita had recently advanced to a junior supervisor position, taking on greater responsibilities within the restaurant service team. Ricky, who began as a bartender intern in February of the previous year, had secured a contract as a bartender by December.

The couple’s intimacy and shared aspirations were captured in their last Instagram post together in May – a visit to Tai Kwun, a moment of shared happiness. Now, their friends flood these memories with tributes and farewells, referring to Ricky and Bregita as the “Perfect couple” and expressing wishes for their peaceful rest.

The fire at New Lucky House was a severe incident that required a significant emergency response. The fire department elevated the situation to a No.3 alarm fire within minutes of their arrival, utilising multiple aerial ladders to rescue trapped residents. The fire was contained by 8.54am and was largely under control by 10.30am, with approximately 50 individuals evacuating themselves to safety and around 250 being rescued from the building. The injured were dispersed across various hospitals for treatment, with five succumbing to their injuries despite resuscitation efforts.
