Young couple sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for participating in Sha Tin riot in 2019


6th December 2022 – (Hong Kong) A couple comprising 2 students aged 22 and 20 years old was arrested on suspicion of participating in a demonstration in Sha Tin on 1st October, 2019 before being arrested together. They denied the crime of rioting and were tried. They were both found guilty earlier and the sentencing was deliberated in the District Court today. The judge described the scene as a battlefield, and criticised the defendants for being lawless, participating in the planned riot, and showing no remorse. He believed that training centre order could not reflect the seriousness of the crim and decided to sentence the two to 4 years and 6 months in prison.
