7th June 2026 – (Hong Kong) Art lovers no longer need to travel to Japan’s Naoshima to admire Yayoi Kusama’s celebrated pumpkins. A rare green edition of the Japanese artist’s iconic Pumpkin sculpture has quietly appeared at Kai Tak Sports Park, near Sogo, offering a free cultural attraction for visitors in Hong Kong.
Lifestyle International Holdings Limited, together with its subsidiaries, has reaffirmed its commitment to bringing art and culture into everyday urban life with the unveiling of a major new public installation at The Twins in Kai Tak. Conceived as far more than a retail complex, The Twins embodies the group’s “Different Together” philosophy, uniting contrasting architectural languages in a single integrated lifestyle destination. Tower I, home to SOGO Kai Tak, reflects the refined warmth of Japanese design influences, while Tower II, known as SNDO, adopts a bold industrial aesthetic. Together, they form a contemporary cultural hub where retail, design and community experiences intersect.
Building on last year’s exhibition of 19th- and 20th-century Thangka paintings, which offered free public access to rare works of heritage art, the group has now turned its focus to contemporary expression. From 6 June, visitors to the open plaza of The Twins Tower I can encounter Yayoi Kusama’s iconic Pumpkin in its first outdoor public showing in Hong Kong. Standing three metres tall, the sculpture introduces a striking presence to the Kai Tak waterfront and marks the beginning of a broader programme that will bring further works by Kusama and other internationally renowned artists to the site.
Rendered in vivid emerald and covered in the artist’s signature black polka dots, Pumpkin is among Kusama’s most recognisable motifs, symbolising comfort, resilience and imaginative freedom drawn from her personal history. Its generous, rounded form lends both playfulness and gravitas to the public square, transforming it into an accessible open-air gallery. Additional large-scale installations, including Antony Gormley’s BIG SPLICE and Izumi Ando’s A Tree & A Pair Of Horses, are set to join the display later this year, underscoring Lifestyle International’s ambition to establish Kai Tak as a vibrant destination for world-class contemporary art.
Best known for her yellow and red pumpkins adorned with bold black polka dots, Kusama’s green variation is far less commonly seen. According to organisers, only two such green pumpkins exist worldwide. The other belongs to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, where it is displayed intermittently as part of rotating exhibitions or special events, often within private or exclusive settings. By contrast, the Kai Tak installation is accessible to the public at no charge.
Situated close to Exit B of Kai Tak MTR station in the direction of Sogo, the sculpture has quickly become a new photo hotspot. Positioned on a lawn and protected by a glass barrier, the work invites admiration from a respectful distance. While visitors cannot pose alongside it as they might with Kusama’s famed outdoor pumpkin on Naoshima, the opportunity to view a rare piece by the celebrated artist in an open urban space has been warmly welcomed.
Kusama has frequently spoken of pumpkins as a recurring motif rooted in her childhood hallucinations. She once described the humble vegetable as a source of comfort and security, calling it both a secret self‑portrait and a tribute to life itself.
