Worker sustains severe burns in suspected engine explosion and fire at Ap Lei Chau shipyard


13th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) At around 4pm today, a 37-year-old worker identified as Mr. Chan was seriously injured when an engine explosion and subsequent fire occurred at a shipyard located at 63 Ap Lei Chau Praya Road, Ap Lei Chau, in Hong Kong Island’s Aberdeen area. The incident took place while Mr. Chan was refuelling a yacht.

Unable to evade the explosion in time, the worker suffered burns covering approximately 30% of his body, causing significant harm. Promptly reacting to the situation, his fellow colleagues immediately reported the incident, seeking assistance.

Rescue personnel swiftly arrived at the scene and found Mr. Chan conscious. After providing initial treatment, he was transported to the hospital via an ambulance. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined and the case is currently classified as an “industrial accident with injuries,” pending further investigation.
